I am a little distressed. I haven't been to
Burning Man yet, but I was previously led to
believe there would be no commerce on the playa.
Something about the word 'decommodification'. As
well, this leads me to believe that the
principle of radical self-reliance isn't being
upheld here.
-
Please tell me that this is
a joke, or that I am misunderstanding...Please.
-
Dude. My thoughts were, "No way! This has to be
a joke!" and then I checked the date.
-
Good one!
-
You have way too much free time ;-)
-
Let's see if this raises hell. I'm going to
forward it to my list!
-
Scott Platsky, one of the things that has
inspired me about BM is the idea of a gifting
economy. I don't know if it's practical but at
least for one week, can't it be? For sanity, in
this hyper-commerce-driven economy?
-
Although, many people do not even cover up the
corporate logos on their truck rentals. Maybe my
slight utopian dream can't even live for a week?
-
That was great!! I filled in the info just for
the hell of it. Great April fools joke.
-
Heh,
you got me a little minute of fool - It's a
good joke.
-
Hey, thanks for posting this!!!! This is such a
bold new direction for decommodification and
gift culture!
-
Can these kiosks display pornographic
advertisements? I want to really cash in on this
offer and I feel that hardcore smut would be the
best marketing tool. Possibly throw some donkey
porn in to keep the consumers' attention.
-
And do your phones have the option to use them
as remote detonators? It would be totally rad to
set off my fuel air bomb art project with a hip
BRC phone! I'm thinking one of your kiosks would
be a great pedestal for the bomb. You have
insurance don't you?
-
Lastly, I was planning to volunteer as a greeter
and earth guardian but now I just wanna work for
BRCellular as a customer service rep. There
aren't too many places to spend my phat paycheck
at BRC and I'm not trying to drink 70 gallons of
coffee. So I'd like to be paid in blowjobs
instead, m'kay?I'm quivering with anticipation!!!
-
Damn...good one. Totally had me for a sec! Then
I'm like " 420 minute
phone cards....wait a minute..." lol
-
Nice
work
-
hahahahhhahahah!!!! Good one....
-
think it will frickin take away the
brain damage I incur trying to swing through
camps over and over, trying to connect with
people... Then again, I've been known to answer
my cellie while in the shower... so... those of
us with the 'habit' are no doubt relieved.
-
LOL-- you are so very bad.
-
I have a vision of this sweeping through the
country as we speak. I've been quietly telling
those posting dismay at the news that they might
think of the possibility of timing, so as not to
ruin the fun. However, seeing this coming from
the east coast gave me added pleasure. This
country will be buzzing for a few hours.
-
Most excellent Scotto!
-
Wow At last a real Cell Company! No fake servers! No calls that are suddenly
dropped! Real Playa service!
-
I know I said I wasn't checking email today but
had a few minutes. I was scanning for anything
really important and saw this.
-
HAHAHAHA.....that's a great
April fools joke
-
You have so outdone yourself on this one!
-
It seems the complexion of our beloved event
will change considerably
this year. After this week's Jackrabbit
newsletter, I emailed Andie at
BMOrg in response to the coffee selling issue
(people wrote in, either
in support of or asking to stop selling coffee
at Center Camp), and
she told me they're also now considering selling
sandwiches, since the
coffee and lemonade are already so popular
there. So it seems if you
wanted to, you could now bring money instead of
food. Sigh.
-
This seems a little absurd to me. Yeah, that's
right
cell phones are absurd but BM isn't.
-
like the limited outside communication. Plus
if
we're getting kiosks where these can be
purchased, how
far away are we from getting sponsored by Pepsi?
-
I guess the "No Commercial Sponsorships" doesn't
apply to "in house"
activities. It won't be Pepsi, it will be BRC
Soft Drinks and BRC
Pizza House or run down to the BRC Grocery
Store..........
-
Ok, I feel stupid. I looked at the phone numbers
for BRCellular and they are
fake. You got me.
-
NICE ONE!
-
Got to get the shares on the IPO!
-
Is today April the First? I Have such a
Hard
time
remembering what day it is.
-
wonder how many nasty emails The Burning Man
Project
will get because of this.
-
Thank you so much for this important service. I
often worry that my job and creditors will not
be able to contact me when I am on assignment
to Black Rock City and your company goes a long
way toward easing my mind. Please contact me to
sponsor a kiosk and get my logo on some
phonecards.
-
Hopefully, your venture will inspire other
businesses to expand into this community. I look
forward to the day that cable television makes
it out to the playa to relieve the tedium of the
long desert nights.
-
Nice I was wondering what April fools day gag
would come around this year Me too, me too.
-
But then again, BRC has Wi-Fi, so this sounded
plausible...Not completely awake
-
ahem - what day is today?
-
And - for
crying out freaking loud - of ALL
people I would expect to read the fine print!!!
-
I do not believe I fucking fell for this. You
son of a bitch, you fooled a New Yorker before
his morning cawfee, when he is most vulnerable.
Many cups later, and more clear headed, I
checked out the URL. Then I see Web design
on your resume. Very fucking nice. You got
me good!
-
There seems to be a growing April Fool's day
tradition among the Burner crowd. The best one
was a few years ago the Playa Chicken folks
created a website that was a dead ringer for CNN
with a story about MTV buying the rights to
broadcast live from BRC. It was pretty good.
-
AND I just checked the date. I am out of shape.
-
It's worse than that. I hear from inside sources
that due to BMOrg's financial difficulties
they've decided to bring in Subway to take care
of the sandwiches. Guess what that means:
advertising everywhere. It's going to be
-
hard not to say last year was
better with stuff like this. At least I'll be
able to get a passable meatball sub.
-
I'm going to stand up and take issue with this!
Anybody with me?
-
I'm serious about this. Subway's meatball
sandwich is NOT "passable"!!
Who's with me?!?
-
repulsive, but hilarious
-
I'm going to be really ticked off if this puts
Playa-Q out of business.
-
I'm still having a problem with cell service in
BRC...my cell phone is one of the things I like
to escape when I'm on the playa - jeez, maybe I
should just bring my boss too....
-
At first I was a
little dubious about this, but
after checking out the website, I remembered
what a pain it is to try and use FRS radios out
there. Long story short, I ordered 2 of the
Samsung phones and one of the kiosks for BIT.
The whole order was less than sixty bucks, which
seems pretty fair considering what we all spend
to go camping in the desert. I even bought the
theft and damage insurance (I'm gonna need
that! )We should start a list of phone numbers
for the OCBurners, so we have the numbers that
we'll be using out there. Now we'll be able to
find each other. This is gonna rock!!!
-
Good plan. Let's start a folder within our
site's Database, where we can all plug in our
cell phone numbers. That way, in late August, I
can call and invite all of you to my RV to watch
DVDs of Burning Man! We can eat pizza (delivered
from Reno, of course, since I'll be able to
order it with my cell phone).
-
Dusty (bringing the default world to the playa,
one step at a time)
-
sounds like a plan, do we know it there will be
a subway near BIT? MIke did they say if you
could use your current provider or do we need to
purchase new phones? if so can you get us a
group rate?
-
man now all we need is a beer company to come in
and we are set.
-
Cell is all about money. If there aren't enough
users to pay for the hardware ten times over
there won't be any towers installed. I don't
think 30k people for a few days out of the year
will sway the economics. Check out the maps for
coverage in places with way more people than
Gerlach. Or is this just an elaborate April
Fools and they really are installing towers?
-
Oh My God I Am Soooooo Gullible ( I think I need
a nanny )
-
sarcasm
can be so sexy!
-
Great job!! Great Laugh!!.Let me know when
your IPO is coming up. I'll buy 1000 shares
using BM BUCKS!
-
awesome.....dammit if it could only be true ..
-
Scott, you have way too much time on your hands.
I'm really impressed with the website. Hopefully
they'll have data service so I can take service
calls while I'm out there.
-
The PolyParadise pre-paid phone card from
BRCellular?!
-
BRAVO! Well done! and on my BDay too!
-
Whoever did this did an excellent spoof!
-
I wish the graphics were a bit better (the
phones are particularly hokey, and it is a
Motorola "RAZR", not "Razor"), and that they
didn't make such obvious technology snafus. (For
example, there is no way to limit cellular
service to a geographical location as specific
as a camp.)
-
The particularly good part is the shot of the
Corporate Headquarters!! I could just see a lot
of sunburned, dusty Burners
sitting in that waiting room!!! ROFL!!!
-
Definitely a fun bit of spoofage...
-
Yeah Cell Phone service at BM
But Cingularry would have been a better name.
-
I do.... what day is it again?
-
uh... I dunno what to say...
-
know I know... Scott got me. It was late...Don't feel bad, it's tricking people left and
right.
-
how did I not hear about this great investment
opportunity?
-
See - my email said Scotto sent this at 11:04 on
March 31... but then again, Arizona is currently
one hour ahead. Therefore, it was April Fools
Day local time when he sent this. I caught that
right away. Figured I'd watch the fun though.
-
This is the best April Fools joke I have seen in
a long time.
-
What a great April Fool's Day joke! Thanks for
sending it!
