Environmental Impact Study Results... |
Black Rock City, NV ---
Eight Radio towers proposed for the Black Rock
Desert will not pose an environmental hazard according
to Federal & County agencies. BRCellular in conjunction with Federal, State,
County & local governments has conducted initial
Environmental Impact studies on the
Black Rock Desert and the area surrounding its
recently completed Corporate Headquarters.
These studies were to evaluate BRCellular's
activities impact on the environment, which
includes land, water, air, structures, living
organisms, environmental values at the site, and
social, cultural and economic factors. |
|
BRCellular proposes eight (8) antennas
located within the boundaries of the
Black Rock Desert. Four (4) main
antennas 694 feet tall & four (4) towers
each 349 feet tall. There is also a
provision for adding four (4) additional
antennas should BRCellular expand its
operations. |
|
|
While no significant long-term affects
to the Black Rock Desert could be
construed from the data and FCC approval
has been granted, the entire project has
not been without controversy. |
|
|
Federal laws require the FCC to consider
the effect of its actions on the
environment and to assure that its
actions are consistent with national
commitments to protection of endangered
species and migrating birds and the
preservation of historic resources and
native American religious sites.
Communications companies—wireless
service providers and broadcasters
alike—must assure that the projects they
pursue will not adversely affect these
natural or cultural resources. |
|
Many environmental
organizations have weighed in, filling
petitions in US District Court requesting that the Commission
conduct additional Environmental Impact
Studies. These groups are
concerned about the impact of the towers on
migratory birds. According to published
data,
"between two and four
million migratory birds are killed each
year as a result of collisions with TV
and Radio towers".
|
|
While other concerns are more aesthetic
in nature.
"The towers will constitute a visual
intrusion to the area and it is our
opinion that it will diminish the
setting of the Black Rock Desert. The
proposed 694ft towers will cause it to
be a dominant feature in the landscape." |

The environmental impacts and aspects of
BRCellular's Wireless operations will
continue to be
evaluated on a regular basis. From this
evaluation, goals and targets will be
established to reduce the severity of
significant environmental impacts.
BRCellular is committed to carrying out
its business in a responsible way,
including environmental activities that
stem from life-cycle thinking. This
means reducing the environmental impact
of our products over their entire life
cycle. |
|
The
number of wireless users in the U.S. has
grown from 1.6 million just 10 years ago
to over 66 million today, according to
the Cellular Telecommunications Industry
Association. |
